What does celebrating Christmas look like for you? Where do you go? What foods must be on the table, no matter what? What decorations do you faithfully bring out because it just wouldn’t be Christmas without them? What carols simply must be sung before it truly feels like Christmas has arrived?
Family traditions matter, because they ground us, shape us, and help us remember who we are. And the same is true for our faith. The season of Advent comes with its own rhythms, its own cherished practices, and its own invitations to prepare room in our hearts for Christ’s coming. Each year at IPC, we walk these familiar paths together—lighting candles, singing the ancient hymns, gathering in worship and fellowship, and turning our hearts toward hope, peace, joy, and love.
Holiday Events
What would Advent at IPC be without the traditions we’ve come to cherish? The Children’s Advent Workshop returns on December 6, bringing creativity, cookies, and Christmas joy to our youngest members. Our annual Sunday School lineup is also back:
- Jeff Leonard’s class on December 7
- Dolores Hydock’s storytelling on December 14
- Christmas Caroling on December 21
And, of course, one of my most beloved traditions: IPC Connect Beer & Carols on December 15 at the Grocery Brewpub. We'll sing children’s Christmas songs from 5:30-6:30pm and the more traditional carols from 7:00-8:00. We'll have good food and libations (non-alcoholic included), some festive party favors, and a visit from Santa himself. Space is limited so be sure to sign up!
Worship
Throughout December, we gather every Wednesday for our Noonday Chapel Service, followed by a warm lunch in the Great Hall. You can sign up for lunch here. This year also brings our Blue Christmas service on Wednesday, December 17—a gentle, contemplative space for those who carry grief, heaviness, or longing during the holidays.
Give
If you are looking for a meaningful way to give back this season, consider honoring someone you love through the Giving Tree. Cards will be available in the parlor each Sunday, with all proceeds supporting IPC Social Services and the Children’s Fresh Air Farm.
Tiny Advent Reflections
Our Advent devotional, Light for the Day, filled with daily reflections and stories written by IPC members, is now available in the parlor. Take one home, and let these small offerings accompany you through the holy season.
Advent begins this Sunday. Just a reminder, we will have only one service at 10 am. May these traditions, old and new, prepare us to welcome Christ again with open hearts.
